CANNES, France—
"Anatomy of a Fall", one of the strongest films competing for the Golden Palm in the 76thCannes Film Festival, begins with a one-on-one interview that quickly goes south. A successful writer named Sandra, played by German actress Sandra Hüller, invites a graduate student to join her at her family's chalet in the French Alps. The two get along, but then deafening music comes from upstairs—Sandra's author husband, Samuel (Samuel Theis), is in a bad mood and wants to make it known—and the interview comes to an abrupt halt. .
It's a tense, playful opener that hints at the marital and legal drama to come in this intricately designed mystery from French director and co-writer Justine Trier. Within minutes, Samuel will have fallen from one of the top floors of the chalet. Sandra is on trial for his murder and will be interrogated repeatedly throughout the rest of the film by judges, lawyers and, most poignantly, her own teenage son, Daniel (Milo Machado Graner).

And so it's funny to be sitting on a sunny rooftop here in Cannes for an interview with the 45-year-old Hüller. We also get along well (we were on the 2019 Berlin International Film Festival competition jury together), but luckily our conversation isn't interrupted by the music and no one falls onto the street below. Instead, Hüller, who has just been rushed out of a press conference, takes a sip of water and inanely apologizes for a snack during our conversation. If you star in two films in competition at Cannes - just days before the 'Anatomy of a Fall' gala premiere, Hüller walked the red carpet in front ofJonathan Glazer's Holocaust drama "The Zone of Interest"- you eat whenever you can.
However, there are clear advantages to having two films, and not just because Hüller, one of the best European actresses working today, is considered a strong contender for the jury's actress award. If she wins, she's more likely to be cited for "Anatomy of a Fall," in which she plays a leading role with shocking ambiguity and emotional range, than for "The Zone of Interest," in which she takes on the incredible challenge of playing Hedwig Höss , wife of notorious Nazi commander Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel).

"Weirdly, if it's two films [at Cannes], it takes the pressure off of one," says Hüller. "The least fun part is having to say goodbye to one crew to be with another." In any case, he's grateful that Glaser took the time to see "Anatomy of a Fall" and that Triet did the same for "The Zone of Interest." Film critic Justin Chang and culture critic Mary McNamara sat down to discuss their favorites as the 76th Cannes Film Festival draws to a close.
"I realized it was a very cowardly move to say, 'I hate her so much, I don't want to play her,'" says Hüller. “I mean, [the Hösses] existed. They were people. That doesn't mean we have to like them or love them or even respect them. … So I went to that place.
Eventually, he couldn't resist the opportunity to work with Glazer, an accomplished British director known for bold and disturbing films such as"Birth"In"Under the skin.""The Zone of Interest," an upcoming A24 release, is no exception. It is a typically austere, boldly conceptualized portrait of the Hösses' family life in the area just outside Auschwitz, the extermination camp overseen by Rudolf Höss for many years. Hüller describes the production as "unlike any kind of shoot I've ever experienced" – partly because of the extreme story and partly because it was shot with tiny cameras hidden throughout the set, a meticulous replica of the film. Because they couldn't see most of the cameras or guess what angles were being captured, the actors had a lot of freedom of action. There wasn't much rehearsal. The idea wasn't so much to stage scenes as to perform the Hösses' daily domestic rituals in something close to real time. However, says Hüller, this freedom was always checked by a sense of how narrow-minded, moral and psychological the characters were.
"There was a lot of freedom in that movement inside the house, but at the same time of course not, because they're not free people, as I imagine them to be," he says. "People driven by hate are not free for me."

During the four weeks she spent filming "Zone" in the summer of 2021, Hüller made no effort to humanize Hedwig. the character's humanity, like her monstrosity, was a given. She emphasized Hedwig's insecurities about class and appearance, with her bold updo and flattering oversized dresses. Hüller also portrayed the character's greed, especially in an early scene where she tries on a fur coat stolen from a recently executed Jewish woman.
“Maybe [Hedwig] wants to be an elegant woman and can never achieve that,” Hüller says, adding that aspiration may be the only level on which she can personally relate to Höss. "I always try to connect with [my] characters, of course," he says. "But in this case, I really had to decide whether to give her something and I decided no, she's not getting anything."
Hüller says her most difficult scene is at the river near home, when Hedwig learns that Rudolf is to be transferred to a post in Germany, possibly upsetting the family's comfortable existence. At that point, Hedwig breaks down in tears — an emotional response that Hüller says she was disgusted by when it appeared. But Glaser assured her that it was good for the character to show emotion, and Huler himself found a way to explain it: "She's a little manipulative at the time, so maybe it's not a real tear."

With two key films, Cannes finds a haunting new take on the Holocaust
British-born directors Jonathan Glazer ("The Zone of Interest") and Steve McQueen ("Occupy City") created two of the big titles of this year's Cannes cinema.
Coincidentally, the most memorable scene in "Anatomy of a Fall" is also a marital dispute, a scene that takes place in an explosive flashback midway through the film. It's an unusually heartbreaking sequence, cinematic as well as theatrical in its unusual length and intensity, and had to be shot from start to finish every time: "We quickly realized that you can't go back and forth, because once you get into it, it grows and it grows and grows,” says Hüller. "We couldn't tear it apart. It was not possible.'
In narrative terms, the revelation of a violent altercation that occurred shortly before Samuel's death is potentially devastating for Sandra, cementing her potential motive for murder. But when we see and hear Samuel turn on Sandra, accusing her of being selfish, controlling and inadequately motherly towards Daniel, Hüller turns this accusation into a kind of vindication.
While the question of Sandra's guilt or innocence remains tantalizingly unresolved, it's hard to look at her and not see a woman whose main crime seems to be feminism. Sandra does not constantly draw attention to the sacrifices she has made to support her husband and son, and she does not exist solely or even primarily to meet their needs and wants. He also makes no apologies for being a more talented, more accomplished writer than Samuel.
“I was wondering the whole time what could he have said or done to end this [argument]? And there is nothing," says Hüller. She also rejects the idea, put forward by some who have seen the film, that her character is somehow cold. “I saw the movie again last night and I thought, where the hell is the moment when that woman gets cold? I really have no idea. Because he talks about facts? Because she is strong for her child? Because he doesn't smile at everyone?
